I’m going to take another viewpoint on asking more detailed questions when grokking a buyer.
I think we run the danger of going overboard in trying to figure out the angles of our buyer, because we have to remember that a persona is a generalization about a majority of our buyers. If we get too specific (How much did he pay for his house? Does he drive a Lexus or BMW?) I’m afraid that we’ll get mired down in details that aren’t relevant for the large percent of our buyers. And to me, that’s the hardest part of developing a persona. We can talk to many buyers and prospects, but we have to make educated decisions about which details and characteristics of those people are most relevant to the larger group of buyers. Because, of course, the danger of getting mired in details is that we lose sight of who that buyer really is.
